A Princess in Distress

The evil Princess Nakry and her son Prince Phirun dominated my mind as we exited the police station.

“Anjali, where do you think you are going? My car is this way. I’ll drop you and uncle off,” said Detective Chea.

“Actually, umm, I would like to head to…umm…I need to give someone a visit.”

“You better not go to the hospital, Anjali.”

“W…why not?”

“Now is not a good time.”

“Uh…umm…sure. I understand.” I did not sound convincing. “Honestly, I need to check on a lead in my missing heirloom case.”

“Today?”

“Yes, while I am hot on a trail. Please let my mother know I will be fine and shall be home soon.”

“Okay. Don’t venture far.”

“I won’t,” I said, feeling unsure if he bought my lie. As soon as he left my sight, I called a cyclo, a three-wheel bicycle taxi.

“Where to, young lady?” asked the driver.

“Please drop me off at Mehta Hospital,” I said. He nodded.

Mehta Hospital was busier than before. I saw random policemen—French and Khmer—huddled around talking and pointing in various directions. I entered the main entrance and asked the front desk person if I could see Mademoiselle Esmè Laurent.

“I’m sorry, Mademoiselle Anjali. Anyone related to Chinak & Associates and has a connection with Mith Sovann is not allowed anywhere near her room.”

“But she’s my friend. I would like to look in on her.”

“No. I am sorry. We’re under strict orders.”

“Please?”

“Mademoiselle Anjali, I’m the lowest on the totem pole. They can fire me at the drop of a hat. I really need this job. Please don’t make it hard on me,” she pleaded with me.

“I understand.” I walked away and lingered around the lobby, thinking about how I could obtain Esmè’s room number. I moved about in the lobby. I walked around and stood at a corner, out of sight of the woman at the front desk. I glanced at my reflection in a large window and noticed I had wrapped one hand around my stomach and was tapping my chin with the other. I had the tendency to do this whenever I was in my thinking mode. Not long thereafter, I overheard a woman asking, “Hi, mademoiselle. My name is Lena. I’m one of the Laurents’ maids.” My ears perked up at her voice. I peered around the corner to the receptionist area. “I’m here to bring food to Princess Dhana,” she said, lifting up the stacked silver containers. The maid was young like me. I had never seen her before. I doubted she had ever seen me before either.

“Sure. You can go through this hallway to that double-glass door. It leads outside where you will see connected buildings. Building number three is on the right-hand side. You can enter through there to the receptionist area where someone will give you the room number.”

“Thank you.”

“Sure.”

I rushed ahead of her to building number three. While waiting for the young maid to catch up, I stopped in a shop to buy a bouquet of flowers and a stuffed teddy bear at the lobby area.
